The total market value of imports exempt from customs duties has reached US$840 million dollars at the Algerian port of Oran during the first half of the year, the Directorate of Trade stated on Wednesday.
In this context, the value of imported goods from exempt countries of the European Union (EU) reached US$670 million, while those of the Greater Arab Free Trade Area (GAFTA) amounted to US$ 169.5 million.
The volume of imported EU products is estimated at 23 tonnes against 20 tonnes from the GAFTA, It was indicated. The exemption was decided after considering requests by local businesses. Oran Directorate of Trade recorded 4,617 applications with 3983 related to the EU region and 634 to GAFTA.
In addition, 183 cases of imports exemption from customs duties were rejected for lack of a certificate proving that the operator has no outstanding tax assessments, or other issues.
